2010 marks the 25th year that a chess tournament is being held in
Bartlesville, OK with the name Phillips 66 associated with it. The tournament
was originally conceived of and organized by Dennis Glasock. In the early
years, Phillips Petroleum supported this tournament monetarily and the Hotel
Phillips provided the site free of charge. Oh how time changes things. Steve
Wharry has organized the most recent tournaments, Phillips Petroleum (now
ConocoPhillips) has not provided monetary support for many years, nor has Hotel
Phillips provide the site for free. However, the tournament has continued to be
one of the premier events in Oklahoma Chess for the last 25 years. This year, for the first time, the playing site is being moved to the Events Center at the Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve, about 12 miles south of Bartlesville on highway 123. This site will certainly be one of the most spectacular sites for playing chess in Oklahoma, if not in the United States. As in the past, one hundred percent (100%) of the entry fees will be returned in the prize fund (estimated at nearly $5,000). This year there will be no free entries, nor reduced entries for Juniors. Also, in recognition of the historic nature of this tournament, the entries will be limited to the first 48 players so pre-registration is highly recommended. (If you wait until Saturday morning, you may not be able to play.) A brunch will be provided on Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 11 AM. Dinner will be provided on Saturday from 4 to 5 PM. There will be no extra charge for these meals, it is my gift to you. The time control will be 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 30 minutes sudden death. All time controls will include a 5 second delay. This will be rated USCF and FIDE and will be an OCF affiliated tournament. As noted earlier, the prize fund is estimated at nearly $5,000, or more specifically, $4,800. (first prize is estimated at $1,400, class A - $1,200, class B - $960, and class C = $600, etc.) I am raising the entry fee for this year tournament to $100/person. Yes, I know that is steep, but remember you are getting 100% back in the prize fund, you are getting to play slow chess with no rating or TD fees, and you get three free meals. Hope you all feel this is well worth the cost. I certainly am looking forward to the experience! |
